THAT network is a group of artist teachers who meet several times each term to discuss art practices and teaching pedagogies.
Since 2015 THAT network has been led by artist-teachers: Sam Hill and Adrian Tobin with the invaluable help of Tania Swift and Natalie Gray. THAT network London is a forum for artists, teachers and arts organisations from across the borough of Tower Hamlets to connect, collaborate, share good practice, fight for an arts education and actively promote artist teachers to revisit their art practice.
We recognise that it is more important than ever to keep together and support each other especially when the arts are under attack and at risk of disappearing or reducing across the borough.
With so much competition within the arts both inside and outside of schools, we believe that a culture of sharing needs to be initiated. Rather than compete with each other, THAT’s philosophy is that through face to face meetings – as well as through the resources and information we aim to provide through our online forum – we can showcase good practice as it happens, archive arts and educational collaboration, celebrate the achievements of those who work within both forums and record the impact that the arts is having across the educational spectre in our borough.
In 2015 we were able to offer four subject specialist CPD workshops based on the needs of our members. Each workshop aimed to develop new skills and re-engage the artist teacher with their practice.
In 2016 THAT launched their first ever collective exhibition – THAT SHOW 2016. Bringing together the work and working practices of 28 Artist Teachers from art departments and schools across Tower Hamlets, the exhibition aimed to showcase the talent of these teachers and the importance of schools and the government supporting an ongoing development of their artistic practice. In 2017 we returned to the Four Corners Gallery and the Half Moon Gallery.
2018 we embarked on a celebration of the arts across Tower Hamlets focussing on artist students and involving collaborations with local galleries and organisations. For 2019 we are creating an exhibition 'A Discourse on Contemporary drawing' which will involve artist teachers and artist students showcasing a selection of work, alongside we will run a series of workshops exploring various methods of drawing.
